Horizon Theatrical Productions seeks to produce works of
theater that help women overcome the struggles of everyday life. All
too often, women have been prevented from becoming all they can be
due to the roles and rules of society, mother-daughter difficulties,
domestic injustices, and sexual taboos. We would like to help women
free themselves and acquire a deep level of self awareness so that
they can be more productive in society, and get a true sense of
healing.
In our first play, Invisible Child, a woman,
Ginger, struggles to listen to her inner voice. Due to abuses from
her mother, and pressures from the outside world, she leaves her
dream of becoming a painter to become an attorney. Through a variety
of characters, music, and dance, we discover how unhappy Ginger is
and what has led her to this state of being. In a moment of
epiphany, she realizes that she cannot live her life according to
others, nor will she allow abuses directed towards her. She decides
to once again follow her dreams. (After a performance of this play,
a woman from the audience approached us to say how "healed" she
felt.)
While we are seeking to produce
Invisible Child on
a larger scale, we will be producing William Gibson's 1958 play,
Two for the Seesaw. This is another story about a woman,
Gittel, who is constantly being used and hurt by men. She is all too
often not accepted for the person that she is: a native New Yorker
from The Bronx, with little education, a failing dream of becoming a
dancer, and progressive in her thinking. While she is downtrodden,
she meets Jerry, a Midwestern man who has just escaped to New York
to get away from his wife's infidelity. The two fall in love. Gittel
is now happier, thinking that Jerry has fixed her life, only to find
out that he too has used her.
Horizon Theatrical Productions is committed to helping women take
a look at their lives so that they can grow, move forward, and heal.
We believe that theater is a place that can facilitate movement and
awareness within an individual.
